Hayabusa Geo Jiu-Jitsu Spats Review: No-Gi Grappling Tested

We’re tackling a review of the Hayabusa Geo Jiu-Jitsu Spats that will help any committed grappler reduce friction burns on the lower body.

Recently, I also tried out the Fusion Rash Guard with these spats, but I’ll be focusing on the spats in this review.

The short of it is that these spats work great because they conform to your body without making you feel constricted or uncomfortable

Keep reading to find out why I like these spats so much.

Key takeaways

  • Reinforced stitching feels highly durable
  • The silicone waistband keeps everything in place
  • Shields the body well from friction on the mats
  • Material conforms snugly to your body
  • Keeps your body temperature regulated even with the extra layer

Reviewing the Jiu-Jitsu spats style

I love the style and features of these spats.

The silicone waistband keeps it secure so you don’t have to keep adjusting while you roll.

The spats have a black base color and a gradient design on top in three color options: grey, blue, and red. I decided to go with the grey because it transitions seamlessly into the dark background.

How the materials feel

These spats were made to feel like a second skin and you can tell that when wearing them.

It feels very durable because of the reinforced stitching. After working out in these for a couple of weeks and washing them, they still perform and feel new.

The silicone waistband holds your spats in place but does not feel too tight on your body. I was very impressed with how well it stayed in place while rolling.

Using in Jiu-Jitsu

These spats are made for No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu competition and training where they work exceptionally well because it shields your entire lower body from the mat.

When you find yourself pulling guard, the last thing you want is for your bottoms to slip down. These hold secure no matter what position you’re put in.

The cuffs at the bottom of the legs are also made to stay put without riding up—which works incredibly well as a second skin because of how well it conforms to your legs.

Using in wrestling

The Geo Jiu Jitsu Spats are made for Jiu Jitsu, but they work well for wrestling practice too.

I wouldn’t suggest wearing these if you are competing in wrestling because often you need the traction that your skin provides to maintain an advantage.

The main position that these spats benefit you is in a sprawl, besides that, these spats would hinder your traction while wrestling.

If you are competing in wrestling I would instead recommend Hayabusa’s Geo Vale Tudo Shorts.

Those shorts allow the skin of your shins and knees to touch the mat which is highly beneficial in the bottom position.

Again, these spats are great for Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling practice.

BUT if you are competing in wrestling, I would recommend shorts or singlets to allow maximum traction with your thighs, knees, and overall legs.

However, if you have a skin condition, these spats are great to cover your body and allow all the same mobility as a singlet.

These are also great to wear under shorts or sweatpants if you’re cutting weight and anyone who trains in wrestling should consider picking up a pair for practice.

Final say on the Geo Jiu-Jitsu Spats

These spats are great for grappling, especially Jiu-Jitsu, but I’d recommend shorts if you’re competing in wrestling.

The reinforced stitching will make it last long and the multi-stretch fabric will make you comfortable wherever grappling takes you.

The waistband keeps the spats secure. But above all else, it shields your skin from the mat which is exactly the goal of this product.
