Joshua Van’s first flyweight title defense is set. The young champ will take on Japan’s Tatsuro Taira at UFC 327, set for April 11 at the Kaseya Center in Miami.
Word broke after Van himself confirmed the news at a Q&A session with fans ahead of UFC Houston’s Strickland vs Hernandez event. Van is looking to keep the belt he seized in wild fashion at UFC 323 last December, when he stopped Alexandre Pantoja less than half a minute into the opening round. That win, helped by a gruesome arm injury to Pantoja, put Van on the map as the second-youngest champion in UFC history and the first men’s UFC champ from Asia born in the 2000s.

Now, Van’s sitting at 16-2 with a target on his back. He wasted no time calling for action after taking the belt, declaring, “I want to fight in February. Whoever wants the belt, come fight me for it.” The UFC scheduled him for April, but his intent was clear: defend and prove he’s worthy of the crown.
Taira brings an 18-1 mark and recent momentum into Miami. His only career loss, a razor-thin split decision to Brandon Royval, didn’t slow him down for long. Taira stormed back with wins over Hyun Sung Park and finished former champ Brandon Moreno at UFC 323, basing himself as the clear next man up. Taira later said Moreno was the “perfect opponent” to prove he was ready for the big stage. Now he gets his shot.
The rest of flyweight is in limbo. Alexandre Pantoja is still working his way back from injury. Dana White made it plain that Van would need to defend the belt before a rematch happens. Manel Kape is pushing for his own title bid, pointing to a pending matchup with Royval, but Taira’s latest run is hard to ignore.
Both Van and Taira are seen as the new wave for flyweight. Van’s brashness and rapid climb draw heat, and Taira’s blend of technique and grit has made him a tough out for everyone he’s faced.
The official UFC fight poster isn’t up yet, but Van and Taira are already in camp while UFC 327 is rumored to be taking place on April 11th in Miami. The card should fill out soon, and the division’s future is hanging in the balance. Whoever wins in Miami will likely hold the key to the next chapter at 125, with names like Pantoja, Kape, Royval, and Moreno all trying to climb back into the mix.
