Francis Ngannou parts ways with PFL

Francis Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion known for his knockout power, has officially parted ways with the Professional Fighters League. The PFL confirmed the split on March 6, 2026, making Ngannou a free agent and raising new questions about his future in both mixed martial arts and boxing.

In a statement, the PFL said, “The Professional Fighters League has made the decision to part ways with Francis Ngannou. We have great respect for Francis as both an athlete and a person, and we wish him success in the next chapter of his combat sports career.”

Ngannou signed with the PFL in May 2023 after a widely publicized departure from the UFC. The deal was notable for its financial terms, its flexibility allowing Ngannou to pursue boxing while under contract, and its grant of an executive role as Chairman of PFL Africa. At the time, this partnership was viewed as a potential catalyst for change within the sport, aiming to address fighter compensation and expand MMA’s reach on the African continent.

Despite major expectations, Ngannou fought only once in the PFL. His lone appearance came in October 2024 against Brazilian contender Renan Ferreira. Ngannou won the bout, stopping Ferreira in the first round by TKO, demonstrating the finishing ability that helped build his reputation in the UFC. No further MMA bouts followed during his tenure with the league.

During his contract with PFL, Ngannou shifted significant focus to his boxing ambitions, which played a major role in his decision to leave the UFC. In October 2023, he faced WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in a crossover bout. Ngannou pushed Fury over 10 rounds, losing a split decision but gaining considerable respect across combat sports. He returned to the boxing ring in March 2024 against Anthony Joshua but suffered a quick stoppage loss in the second round. Though the matchups increased his international profile and brought lucrative paydays, they did not result in victories.

Ngannou also served as Chairman of PFL Africa, a league initiative designed to foster MMA growth and events across the continent. His involvement was seen as crucial for PFL’s ambitions in Africa, given his status as one of the most high-profile athletes from the region. However, Ngannou’s engagement with the African expansion project was limited. He did not attend the inaugural PFL Africa event in July 2025, which led to public disappointment from league officials. PFL founder Donn Davis spoke about Ngannou’s absence at the time: “I am disappointed that he is not here; this was part of his vision, and we are here because of him.” Ngannou’s role in shaping PFL Africa moving forward is now uncertain.

Ngannou’s free agency comes three years after his high-profile exit from the UFC in January 2023. His move followed a period of contract negotiations centered on increased fighter pay, control over his career choices, and flexibility to compete in boxing. These issues ultimately resulted in Ngannou choosing the PFL, where he appeared to secure both business and athletic opportunities. However, apart from his 2024 victory over Ferreira, his active competition has been limited throughout his time with the promotion.

The path ahead for Ngannou is now open, with no official statements yet from the fighter regarding his next steps. As a heavyweight who has shown the ability to attract attention in both MMA and boxing, Ngannou is expected to receive offers from a range of organizations. He has previously indicated a desire to compete in both sports, though no specific opponents or promotions have been announced at this time.

Ngannou’s career remains a prominent example of the evolving landscape for elite fighters seeking greater control and opportunities within the industry. His efforts to move across disciplines and negotiate for expanded roles have influenced broader discussions about how organizations work with top athletes. Whether Ngannou’s next appearance comes in an MMA cage, a boxing ring, or in a different capacity, his decisions are likely to influence how future contracts and athlete relationships are structured.

And with over heavyweights like Tom Aspinall making greater commercial moves, signing with the Matchroom Talent Agency, the potential future matchups across combat sports are becoming wide open for those at the top of the pile.
